“He was my darkness. He was my own personal demon sent from hell.”
I live in a world few know exist. I’ve trained for this. I know what to say, what to do, and how to act. I’ve perfected the lethal calm required for this life.
Now it’s time to buy my first girl. But all it takes is one look at the brave girl who starts singing mid-auction for that calm to slip.
Briar Chapman is going to be the death of me, and I don’t care. I’ll take every day with her until that death comes, and I’ll welcome it when it does.
On the outside, Lucas Holt is what nightmares are made of. A man cloaked in darkness, with sin-filled eyes and an enticing grin. A devil so devastatingly beautiful and cruel that his very presence instills fear.
But beneath his terrifying, ever-calm exterior is an affectionate man haunted by a past that refuses to stay buried. And Lucas looks at me as though he’s finally found the only person who can make it all go away.
We’re a battle of the brightest day and the darkest night—and I want to lie in the wake of our war.
Wow! I haven’t read a dark romance in a long time so when I heard of Blackbird, I knew I needed to get my hands on it. What I read though, was nothing like what I was expecting and I completely LOVED it!
Briar Chapman was finally happy, she had a life she enjoyed and a finance’ she could not wait to marry. On her way to brunch on a normal Sunday, she spots a friend from work in distress and ends up taking her shift at the restaurant. Briar wouldn’t know how big of a mistake that would be until she is grabbed, drugged, and sold to the highest bidder.
“There was something possessive in the way he was holding me.
And for once, I didn’t mind it. Right there in his arms…that felt right.”
Briar is terrified waking up in an unfamiliar dark room when the drugs wear off her. As scared as she was in the beginning, Briar always kept her spunk and her attitude and ability to fight back. She was a strong female character who was also a little bit shattered. She was confused with her captor (her devil), the world she was being put into didn’t make sense to her and she couldn’t figure out why one minute he would want to teach her a lesson and the next he would hold her to calm her down…
She was the first.
In Lucas Holts world you are never supposed to pick the first girl. Groomed by a dangerous mentor, Lucas finds himself in a world full of Masters and their girls. One big rule, you aren’t supposed to care for your girls, they are simply there to do what you want and live your lifestyle like the others. As soon as Lucas set his eyes on Briar Chapman though, he knew he wouldn’t ever be able to let her go. She was his Blackbird.
“I hated that thought of someone touching what was mine. I owned her before I ever bought her, and there was no way I wasn’t buying her…first or not.”
Sounds like a victim and captor love story, huh? That’s what I thought too, but McAdams totally shuts it down with the chain of events that she has in store for you.
For the good 25% of this book, I would say my heart was pounding. I couldn’t decide if I loved Lucas or if I thought he was the devil like Briar did. It didn’t take long for me to completely fall for him though, just like Briar. He stole my heart without me even knowing it and I never once blamed Briar for loving him all the same and trust me when I say, you won’t either.
“I had given my heart to a man who had no intention of giving his to me. As much as I wanted to believe that he could, I wasn’t sure he was capable of such things. Because he is darkness. He is the devil …and I love him. Devastating.”
The writing, the characters, the angst, the suspense, Blackbird truly had it all. You know you are hooked on a book when you just didn’t want it to end, I wanted more of Briar and Lucas. I also found myself fascinated with the world that the author created. The lifestyle, it was terrifying and addicting to read about all at once. Mostly though, it was so real that it was scary. Human Trafficking is so big in today’s world and the way that the author brought it to life in this book was spectacular!
This is one dark romance that I would reccomened over and over again. This was my first book by Molly McAdams and I am happy to say it won’t be my last. I’m excited to continue reading this series when the next book comes out. If you like romance, if you like suspense, I think you would love Blackbird!
